The growth and reproduction of medicinal leeches is an activity requiring specialized documentation regarding the biology of these invertebrates and the conditions of the natural environment in which they normally develop so that in captivity similar conditions are ensured so that she can yield in reproduction and have a normal and healthy development.
Leeches of this species have a good adaptation in captivity if the environment strictly adhere to certain conditions of luminosity, temperature, humidity and noise. They have an increased sensitivity to their contact with chemicals, so their use is forbidden.
Important in their development are water quality and biological control of food. They are fed with fresh blood from young and healthy animals coming from slaughterhouses which are sanitary-veterinary authorized . These conditions are different from the wildlife counterpart!
Reproduction of leeches in the company's bio-laborer is done throughout the year, being able to deposit coconuts in any season.
Cocoon depositation is an important step in its development process, so environmental conditions must be strictly observed and supervised otherwise the children inside the cocoon are no longer formed or die. Growers passionate about the growth and reproduction of these little beings often suffer from difficulties at this stage!
If the environmental conditions are respected and a careful selection of future leeches is made. From a leech, 80 to 150 pups can be born, that have even since birth the appearance of a leech resembling their mothers.

Raising the spawn is another important step because they can get sick and die. Their feeding is done either with freshly placed blood in the intestines (an older method), or in a site based on a collagen membrane by which the pups penetrate with their bite .
In captivity, leeches mature after 6 to 10 months of intensive feeding and are put up for sale after a minimum of 4 months of fasting in a specially designed area. The leeches reproduced and raised in captivity resemble those found in the wild and sometimes they are also lighter in color. Water quality is also essential at this stage.
The quarantine period is provided in a specially arranged and treated area from a bacteriological point of view. It must be at least 4 months before they are applied in hirudotherapy.
The sale of the leeches is done all year round, only from the biolaboratory, based on a firm order or on a contract of sale-purchase, both to physical persons and to authorized / legal persons.
Leeches are only put on sale after this quarantine period and transported in wet bags on a bed of wet sponges enclosed in polystyrene boxes.
